Kid's Birthday Party Caricatures: Edmonton Artist Laurel

Drew caricatures at a very big, very busy kid’s birthday party! This first little girl (from my photos here), in the blue dress, helped me with my sign up sheet all afternoon. I was so impressed at how she took on the task and was un-wavered! What a huge help she was and she kept the kids coming so I could just concentrate on drawing.

Don’t you think that the girl wearing all the gold necklaces looks like a young Molly Ringwald from Pretty in Pink? I think so!

One lady was so pleased to be able to have gotten a caricature of all three of her kids. See the photo below

Caricature gifts at Wedding: Edmonton Artist Laurel

I think I’ll always remember this wedding reception! Why? Well the bride hired me a year and a half in advance but I realize it. So I went to this community hall last May. No one was there. “It’s for May 31, 2015!” At least I was early and not late. So when I pulled up to the same community league building this time I got a big smile on my face … “Oh it’s THAT wedding reception!” In a good mood right off the bat.

Here are some of the fun people I met and drew that night. I had drawn the two lovely ladies in one of these photos a few years ago at Millcreek Outdoor Pool’s summer opening event. One of them is the bride’s aunt and told her about me. How nice! I recognized them both right away because of two things: they were together like they were when I drew them at the pool AND they are crazy awesome with bigger than life smiles and a love life attitude. How could you not remember that?!

The couple in the photos with the guy wearing the striped tie said they are getting married in Brazil and asked if I’d go there to draw for their wedding. Wouldn’t that be a fantastic thing to be able to do! Maybe I should check that lotto ticket - holidaying in Brazil and pop in to draw at their wedding reception.

caricatures for a department in ATCO Electric

I just finished doing several caricatures for a department in ATCO Electric. I did individual ones and then put the individuals into a big group caricature. Here’s one of my favourites! Each person had a personal touch added. Here’s a Star Trek fan…

I was at one of Christenson Developments newest building in Sherwood Park for a “Meet Your Neighbour” evening. It was a lively night with lots of conversation, wine and food. As I was leaving, there were still a bunch of new neighbours gathered in the big tent outside enjoying getting to know each other. Here are some of my favourites from the night. It sure looks like Christenson Developments knows what people want, their buildings are gorgeous and they think about the whole experience with great locations. The location on Festival Way in Sherwood Park is close to walking trails, rec and entertainment facilities, stores. Fabulous! But the most important part to me is that they were interested in people meeting each other. I was looking through my photos last night gathering up some caricature examples to show a new client and I was so happy that I take the time to take some photos at each of my events. I spent more time than I should have looking through them thinking, “OH! I remember that one!” etc. Remembering the moment.

Caricatures for Central Social Hall Staff

Central Social Hall invited me to The Ranch to draw caricatures at their Annual Staff Party. Take a look at a few of my favourite drawings. Sometimes when you get going, drawing person after person, you regret not taking a moment to take more photos.

Maybe you’ll see one of these people at Central Social Hall next time you go!

Caricatures at Villa Caritas Edmonton

I drew caricatures at Villa Caritas for Nurse’s Week. I met some great people that did various jobs at Villa Caritas for the residents. It was really nice to chat with them while I drew them. Here are a few of my favourite caricatures from the day.

Checking out Gerry Rasmussen's Art Show

I took some time today to check out my friend and colleague’s art show. Check out Gerry Rasmussen’s art show “Take Me To Your Leader” at Great Bear Frames ( 12247 Fort Road, Edmonton ). My daughter came along with me and enjoyed it too. Go see the likes of John Candy, Neil Young, Wayne Gretzky, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, newly minted Premier Rachel Notley, Daryl Katz, and even Gerry’s cat! You need to see them up close, they’re fantastic!

Day 2 at The Cheremosh Ukraininan Dance Festival

I have a lot of photos to show from the Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Festival but I was there for 10 hours so it makes sense that I’d have this many photos to show you! I loved drawing at this festival because as you can see, the dancers were so good at smiling - they made it easy for me. I got to draw lots of braids and lovely Ukrainian attire. So here are only SOME of my favourites from the day … I had such a wonderful time but boy, was I tired at the end. You don’t realise how tired you are until you stop!

When I look at these they bring a smile to my face. Hope they do the same for you. I feel so lucky being able to do this for a living.

Caricatures at Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Festival in St. Albert

My first afternoon drawing at the Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Festival, at The Arden Theatre in St. Albert, was a pleasure to be at. There’s nothing like drawing dancers … they sure know how to smile and it’s easy for them to hold that smile. Sure makes it easy for a caricaturist! Here are some of my favourites from the day.

I’m sure I will have several more to show you after back drawing there again tomorrow. Looking forward to it!

I have to admit I had tons of fun creating this CRA Monster for OnCore Bookkeeping’s monthly advertising campaign! If this image “speaks to you” then I’ve done my job well! … as I type this with a grin face. I wish you all a smooth and happy tax season.

City of Edmonton Pool Safety Sign

I’ve been doing a series of posters for all City of Edmonton swimming pools. This one addresses the issue of people holding their breaths for a longer period of time than is safe. It’s something than many people have done but did you know that lifeguards have to attend to people who get into real danger because of it?

The City of Edmonton is a leader in safety prevention and getting important messages like this one out to their clientele. Taking action instead of reacting. Bravo!
